Procedures and Policies

C.H.O.O.S.E.
The Institute of Happiness in the United States of America has developed a program which teaches people  how to be happy. This program works around the concept that we can choose to be happy by the very actions we make. Each letter in the word highlights a positive action we can take to promote happiness. C stands for Clear goals, H stands for a healthy lifestyle, O stands for others, O stands for being optimistic, S stands for strength of mind and E stands for enjoying the moment.. The choices we make in our lives result in certain consequences.
"Happiness is not something ready made, it comes from your own action."(Dalai Lama)

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT

At St Bernardine’s School, there are 4 rules that apply at all times both in the classroom and in the playground. These 4 rules are as follows
• Speak to please, not to tease.
• What the teacher says, we do.
• Signal to speak and move.
• Hands and feet off other people and their things.
Failure to follow these rules in the playground results in the student walking for a selected time with the teacher. More serious infringements result in the student getting a green card. The student then spends playtime the next day in the office where he/she is required to complete a sheet outlining his/her inappropriate behaviour and what could have been done to avoid that behaviour.
Failure to follow any of the four rules in the classroom results in the use of the 4 step program.
On the first infringement, the child goes to step 1, where the child stands behind his/her chair for 3 minutes.
On the second infringement on the same day, the child goes to step 2 where he/she stands at the back of the room for 5 minutes.
On the third infringement on the same day, the child goes to step 3 where he/she is seated at the back of the room facing away from the class for 15 minutes.
For the fourth infringement on the same day, the child is removed from the class and is sent to the office. The parents are notified by phone of the child’s behaviour.
